Write your own health rules

People often ask me, “how can you be so disciplined” and “how can you eat ‘like that’ all the time”? I laugh a little bit when this happens because I don’t feel that disciplined and, truth be told, I really like my food so it’s pretty easy to eat “like that” most of the time.

Then again, I’ve been doing this long enough that “healthy” is just a part of my life now. I know it’s kind of annoying to hear that, but it’s true. And it can be true for you too. I wouldn’t be in this profession if I didn’t think that was the case.

But how did I get there, right? How did I make the healthy choice the easy for me?  The truth is, I found it really helpful to create a set of rules for myself. Nothing too crazy or regimented, but just general guidelines to keep me in check.

I still use these rules today. And I can do that because my rules aren’t dogmatic. They aren’t judgmental. And they definitely don’t look like the bullsh*t mainstream definition of health. You know, constrict, refuse, and limit. And that’s on purpose because, for me, being healthy is about having the energy, confidence, and ability to live my life the way I want to – and a bunch of “no”s isn’t going to excite me or energize me or make me feel good.

My guess is a bunch of “no”s won’t work for your either. They haven’t yet, right? So, what health rules can you implement that will excite, energize, and make you feel good? Make some time to think about it and then write down. When you’re done, place them somewhere you can see them daily. This will make them a lot easier to execute.

This small activity helped me when I got started and, honestly, continues to help me every day. My hope is it can do the same for you.
