How to find your perfect workout
Working out can be fun. Yes. Fun. Really. Of course, it doesn’t mean working out is easy. But it can be fun, especially if you engage in exercises that suit you and your body.
If you’re new the fitness game or have been out of it for a while, I recommend the following to develop a routine that sticks:
- Seek out exercises you think you’ll love. If you like the way an exercise makes you feel, you’re more likely to commit to showing up at 6am (or pm) to do it. To figure out what those exercises could be, think about your ideal workout setting and how you want to feel after you move. For instance, if you like a group setting and want to feel powerful, a vigorous exercise like kickboxing may be your jam.
- Treat movement like food. Different workouts will nourish you in different ways – just like food. So, make sure there is variety in your workout routine. Mixing up it up will give your body what it needs to excel. Plus, variety will keep you from getting bored, which is key to staying on track with workouts.
- Be kind to yourself. It takes time to build your endurance and strength. So, don’t get down on yourself if you’re not as fast as the person next to you on the treadmill. He’s been running longer than you. Of course, he’s faster than you. Have some patience. You’ll get there.
Working out isn’t supposed to be a chore. It should be fun, and it will be if you keep at it. Just remember to go at your own pace and engage in activities you like. It’s the only way to develop a routine with staying power.
